Mimi Maddock, publisher of The Columbia Star and a regular customer at Amy Nails, says, “I have been getting manicures and pedicures at Amy Nails for several years. I have always wanted to make people happy, so knowing my work is keeping clients leaving the salon feeling great and having a better day then I have done my job.” I love what I do and enjoy coming to work every day. Maggie has brought a new line of services to Amy Nails offering professional facials including chemical peels. She is currently working at Amy Nails with her brother and sister-in-law. Maggie then earned her esthetician license in 2010. She began working part time as a nail tech in 2002. She worked several years in banking and then decided that corporate world wasn’t for her. Maggie attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill and earned a BS in business with a concentration in finance. They moved to Columbia ten years ago and currently own and operate Amy Nails, located on Beltline Boulevard in Forest Acres. Tom Vu married his wife, Amy, who was also from Vietnam. He began to train to work in a nail salon and found that he had a talent for the business. He was 21 when their family arrived in the United States and was ready to find employment. Tom Vu, like many other immigrants, had the American dream of owning a business and becoming financially independent. There were hardships, but there were also many blessings in our family.” When we came to the United States, my parents’ only wish for their children was to have better life and better education. Maggie says, “It was the most challenging time for my family because of the language barrier and learning to adapt to a new culture. The Vu family came to the United States in 1995 and moved to Rock Hill, S.C. According to Maggie, “Many United States officials showed support for the cause of these refugee families and granted the Southern Vietnamese former military officers and government employees special status to stay and thrive in the United States after the war.” The Vu family was one of many Southern Vietnamese refugees fleeing the communist government in those postwar years. Her older brother, Tom Vu, was responsible for taking care of Maggie and all of the household responsibilities during these years of waiting. At the end of the war in 1975, he was kept in a communist re- educational camp/ prison for six years. Maggie’s father had served in the Special Forces with the South Vietnamese Army alongside the United States military in the fight against the Communist North Vietnam. That was never a question.Maggie Vu was born in Vietnam in 1982 while her family was living in the countryside of Vietnam waiting for permission to emigrate to the United States. I’m in charge of the look, which includes the glasses, but I work in tandem with props, so that when we had a fitting with Tom, we knew of course that the Aviators were going to be on board. These are classic, Aviator Ray-Bans, and what I do and what costume designers do is you work with props, who is in charge of making the glasses.
